Supporting the Sundown Marathon runners

June 1, 2009 § 2 Comments

I thought I’d do my bit for the Sundown Marathon this year – to be a supporter instead of racing my guts out for once. 🙂  I liked the experience, despite the fatigue felt from standing and trying to stay awake.

Going by last year’s experience, I anticipated that the support for the race would be quite spartan.  I held Milo bars for JacQ & Rahmad (a beefy gym instructor) , ice cubes/packs and flat Coke for the ultra-marathon runners, while helping to distribute Powergel sachets.  The ice cubes and flat Coke were a welcome reprieve for the tired marathoners.   (It can get quite boring drinking only 100 Plus and water.)

Some marathoners had a great sense of humour.  Here are a few snippets:

“Do you have durian?  I don’t want Powergel.”

“I want durian flavoured Powergel.  Don’t want chocolate flavour.”

“Can you run for me?”

“HELLO! HELLO! HELLO! HELLO!”

It was inspiring to witness ultra-marathon runners like Jeanette, Swee and Mika whiz by effortlessly, and whoop for joy when friends ran past.

One of my friends, JacQ overcame many odds to complete the race.  She’s shown courage and true grit.

To the Sundown racers – you’ve completed the race with fierce determination.  Well done!

Here are the supporters.  We look like a motley crew!
