Racing for Charity

It was with a great deal of thought that I decided to take the plunge and use my participation in IMNZ to raise funds for the Campus Care Network fund, a fund for needy students at my institution. It’s my way of giving back to the institution where I’ve taught for the last 10 years. It’s a place that has enriched my life tremendously, where I’ve nurtured relationships and friendships over the years.
I seldom talk about my life outside of the office to colleagues and and students, so not many know that my real work begins either at 5am or at 6pm after office work hours.
So, it was with great trepidation that I approached my boss about my fund raising idea. I was pleasantly surprised that she offered full assistance and support in my quest. This was the email I wrote to her:
Hi
I’ve signed up for Ironman New Zealand, and it’ll be on 5 March 2010. It’s exactly two months to race day, today.
The countdown begins!
I’d like to use this opportunity to raise funds for CCN. Its my way of giving back to a community that has given me so much during my 10 years here.
Donors could consider donations in the following format:
- Pledge a fixed amount
- To donate $xx per km of the race – e.g. $1/km to $5/km (or any amount) for the distance(s) that I will be covering (3.8km swim, 180km cycle, 42.2km run)
- Various departments/sections could get together to donate a fixed sum
- (Please, no betting on how fast I can go!)
I hope to raise an amount that equals the race fees that is NZ$753 (approximately, SGD$753). But of course, any amount is welcome, as all proceeds will go towards the CCN fund.
I will also publicise this on the school blog to staff in the lead up to the race. I have to complete the race within 17 hours, and of course, donors will be able to catch me “live” on the internet on race day – so that they know I’m working very hard for the donations! I’ll be willing to conduct a sharing session for staff and/or students if the school requests for it.
I’ve trained very hard for this race and it’s been a learning experience for me, physically, mentally and emotionally. It’s a race that commands respect for the distance that one has to cover.
Thank you for your support. I hope to be able to raise the intended amount (and more!)
Regards
Lynn
Of course I have my fears that nobody will donate to my cause, but I guess I’ll never know till I try. I have faith that my colleagues will come through. Any amount would definitely help the needy students in my school. Anything for a good cause. :)
